It's that magical time of the year again! The Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival is here to enrich & inspire your life with some of the greatest stories from India & across the world. We're celebrating our 19th anniversary with a variety of breathtaking performances, musical wonders and a few surprises! Alongside the best from India on display - Ishara has once again travelled around the globe to curate a fantastic line-up for 2023.

The festival is nurtured & supported by the Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust, India's leading established platform for Indian & International puppetry. From humble beginnings in 2001, we've matured into one of Asia's largest & most prestigious puppet festivals. Thousands of visitors support us each year, and grace the festival to see traditional to modern forms of puppetry, ranging from rod to string puppets; to mixed performances with dance, theatre, music & more. We have entertained, educated and empowered both the young and old, through award winning puppetry productions & many educational workshops.

Produced by Teamwork Productions; the festival has brought to India over 160 international puppetry companies & promoted numerous indigenous productions. Countries which have participated & showcased their works include the UK, Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Israel, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Iran, Afghanistan, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Australia & USA.

This year the 19th Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival will take place from 14th to 20th February 2023 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi & Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh.

GULLIVER'S TRAVELS

Jonathan Swift's much loved children's tale is brought to life in this dazzling adaptation. It's an adventure full of beautiful puppets, foot tapping music and kooky objects! Gulliver gets caught in a terrible sea storm, and suddenly finds himself a giant among men, ashore the magical island of Lilliput. At first held a prisoner by the tiny Lilliputians, he slowly wins over their hearts, showing them what compassion, love and true friendship should be like. The show will teach all ages alike that it's never how big you are in size, but how big you are on the inside that counts.

Nurtured by the Salaam Balaak Trust, director MOHAMMAD SHAMEEM first studied theatre and then sculpture, before deciding that puppet theatre was his calling. Today, the talented young puppeteer has his own production house, based out of Delhi. He has staged many productions like Flying flower, Humara Circus & Pinocchio to great acclaim across India and worldwide, and conducts puppetry workshops in schools, NGOs and communities.

Get ready for a unique celebration of Dutch culture, with an array of colourful characters to tickle the funny bone. The King William Alexander and Queen Maxima have come to visit their subjects, but can't greet them as someone has stolen the King's royal crown. When Jan Klaassen discovers that his bicycle has been stolen by the same person, he decides to track down the thief. As he and his wife try to catch the crook and restore the Crown to the King, absolute mayhem follows! The show is an innovative and interactive experience that will engage children and adults alike.

An award winning puppeteer, performer and educator based in Holland, FRANK HAKKEMARS has entertained audiences across the world for over four decades. He has produced and created a number of well-loved solo puppet performances and also worked with the Koomans Poppentheater and Droomtheater. His workshops turn children and adults into confident puppeteers and empower them to tell their own creative stories with simple materials. He studied sociology of welfare, and is also a councillor at NVP-UNIMA-Netherlands.

Based on famous traditional Hungarian folktales, this show is an enchanting journey about the power of one's imagination; with stories about royal heroes, fantastic magical creatures, and a dragon with musical wings. Will the mighty King save the day and live happily ever after? What happens next is a surprise! This one of a kind interactive show will teach children and adults of all ages that everyone can make a difference, no matter who they are.

The KAMFOR ZENESZ PUPPET THEATER is one of Hungary's most innovative and well known puppetry groups. Bringing to life Hungarian folk tales and modern children literature, the ensemble's goals are the revival of Hungarian puppet traditions, as well as the development of modern and contemporary puppet theatre. The group's work revolves around the fact that nothing is more important than drawing from the past, understanding the present and knowing the future. The award winning company has a constantly moving marionette show, which has been staged successfully in many places worldwide.

AISHA'S JOURNEY

In this mesmerizing & inspirational tale for all ages, little Aisha discovers that God is going to make the sun disappear as we don't take care of our world. None of the adults are willing to make him change his mind, so brave little Aisha travels to heaven to do so. She meets God and through a magical telescope they see the beauty and also the misery of mankind. God promises Aisha that he will lend the sun to earth for another 20 years, and then will look down again to see how humanity is. What do you think he saw then? A much loved Swedish children's book comes to life in this evocative Indian adaptation.

Korean's rich cultural heritage is brought to life as puppets; music, dance and mime blend together in a unique show. The colourful flower and butterfly symbolise happiness, the dancing crane showers good luck to one and all, and the angel brings hope and blessings into your life. There's also a mischievous Grandpa hip-hopping, who brings laughter and great cheer. A showcase of traditional & modern forms of puppetry, the wonder and joy of life's beauty unfolds before the audience, while paying homage to Korea's past, present and future.

One of Korea's most well-known puppet theatre groups and platforms for puppetry, THEATRE SANGSAHWA was founded in 1997. The group's unique name comes from the word sangsahwa which means puppet shows in Korean. BONGSUK KIM and KYUMI - KO have performed across the world to appreciative audiences. The theatre's repertoire consists of productions made to showcase Korea's rich traditions and its puppet heritage. They have won great acclaim at various festivals for their unique performances combining puppets, music, dance and mime.

It's a universal story all can relate to learning about humanity, love and all its colourful mysteries, on the journey of one's life. In a series of beautiful poetic vignettes puppets magically come to life as funny and relatable characters. There's a naughty dog, kooky bird, a crazy belly dancer and a mischievous camera man that will pull the heartstrings of the young and old alike. Inspired by the puppeteer's own memories, music and dazzling puppetry replace words in this captivating non-verbal performance where marionettes and man become one.

AGOSTINO CACCIABUE & RITA XAXA have performed for audiences across the world, entertaining and engaging children & adults alike. Both are master puppet makers as well who designs and creates their own puppets. TEATRO TAGES has revived the art of puppetry in Italy, promoted and discovered many talented puppeteers & performers, and enthralled audiences the world over with their award winning shows. From folk tales to children’s favourites, their shows are all for educating and entertaining children and adults alike. It's the timeless fable of a caged bird, which realises the spirit of freedom. It's a saga of dreams and the secret of following your dreams. Audiences discover the true meaning of the soul and all existence, in this engaging and one of a kind show.
